Survey: Are Skills Shortages Crippling The Digital Sector?

Skills DroughtIs there a dearth of candidates in the digital industry? Is it hindering the growth of the sector? And what do employers, recruitment consultants and HR professionals think is going to happen next year?

All questions that we talk about constantly here at Chinwag Towers, but we thought with the year rapidly drawing to a close, it’s high-time we put these issues out to a wider audience with a quick survey. It’s designed to provide a quick barometer on what 2007 held, and what’s in store for 2008.

This short survey only takes a couple of minutes to fill out and there’s an option to get the results emailed to you when we’ve crunched the numbers. If you’re involved in recruitment in the digital sector, whether directly, as a recruiter or if you’re involved in recruiting for the digital department of a company, we’d love to get your input.

As always, if you’ve got any opinions, thoughts, comments or sugesstions, we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to comment below or drop us an email.

So, don’t hesitate, why not fill in the survey now?

  1. yeah i’ve been talking about the skills shortage for the last 9 months or so.

Personally I think its because of the .com crash, when the crash happened the market was flooded with web designers with years of experience and people graduating university with degrees in digital design couldn’t get jobs as no one was taking on inexperienced designers.

I know this from my own experience graduating in 2001 or was it 2002, anyway my point being that as no one was hiring these would-be designers took up jobs in other fields. Agian i think less then 7 people out my year of 28 actually are working as web designers today.

thus there being a shortage of experienced designers and the one that there are, and that i know of have taking to freelancing as it really is a designers market and you can pick and choose your jobs.

which is good news for us!

Not sure if this is similar with frontend / backend developers?

  2. First I thought “what skills shortage?” - then I saw this post with three links to the same URL but with different link text for each. Yep - there’s a new media skills shortage, aright.

  4. It’s an interesting take on the market, I think the real issue are businesses who don’t understand how completely different digital is from marketing. So they try to cover it across other people’s jobs rather than developing a seperate units.

The problem then is that there aren’t enough jobs to encourage people to move around. I know that I won’t be going anywhere for a long time until people really start investing in these areas!
